Why Lysistrata

Lysistrata (in ancient Greek Λυσιστράτη / Lusistrátê, literally means "the one that loosens the army", of λύω / lúô, "to untie" and στρατός / stratos, "the army"). Aristophanes’ ancient Greek comedy, Lysistrata, originally performed in classical Athens in 411BC. tells the story of a woman’s extraordinary mission to end the Peloponnesian war between Greek cities by denying all the men of the land sex, which was the only thing they really desired.

During a time when all they were expected to do is have sex, raise children and depend on men for survival, Lysistrata proved that women do have power in society. The courage of Lysistrata changed the role of women from being objects to decision makers in society.

Through the actions of Lysistrata, women gained the respect they deserved and proved that they could be independent from home and men. Lysistrata showed that women can question the stereotypical role forced upon them by society and that they could chart their own path.
